Step-by-Step Hydro-Dipping Process

Step 1: Preparation  

Start by preparing the car parts you want to hydro-dip. Clean them thoroughly to remove any dirt, grease, or residues. Use sandpaper to sand the surface lightly, creating a rough texture for better paint adhesion. Once sanded, rinse and dry the parts completely.

Step 2: Apply Primer 

Apply a coat of primer to the car parts. This will help the base coat paint stick better. Make sure to cover the parts evenly and allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Using generic aerosol paints from your neighborhood hardware shop is not advised.

Step 3: Cut Film

Step 6: Dip

Wearing gloves, slowly and steadily dip the car part into the water at an angle. This helps to avoid trapping air bubbles under the film. Move the part through the film smoothly, ensuring the entire surface is covered. Once the part is fully submerged, remove it from the water and let it dry.

Step 7: Rinse 

Wash the remaining PVA substance with warm water. Rinse the part thoroughly until it no longer feels slimy to the touch.

Step 8: Dry

Use an air blower, air knife, or another accelerated drying method, or let your parts air dry on racks.

Step 9: Apply a Clear Coat

Using an HVLP spray gun, apply a clear coat of automotive grade. For this step, having a clean paint booth is essential as it will assist you from getting dirt into your clear coat. When applying high gloss finishes for automotive, marine, and aviation applications, this is particularly crucial.

Step 10: Final Touches
